This study examines law enforcement within the context of Sung society. Professor McKnight shows that the group of criminals who were the core of the habitual criminal group in Sung China were young unattached males with few lifeskills. 马伯良：美国汉学家，亚利桑那大学东亚系教授，主要从事宋史与中国法制史研究，著作有《中国南宋乡村职役》，《宋代的法律与秩序》，已翻译为中文版的论文有：宋代竞渡骚乱罪——从《明公书判清明集》看法律案件的解读等。

刘子健（1919—1993），祖籍贵阳，生于上海，曾就读于清华大学、燕京大学，1948年赴美。20世纪50年代，研究重心转向宋史。1960年，入斯坦福大学任教。1965年，入普林斯顿大学任教。刘子健是美国宋史研究的顶级学者，也是促进国际宋史交流的领袖人物，对突破国家与民族界限的国际性学术合作卓有贡献。主要专著有《中国转向内在：两宋之际的文化转向》《宋代中国的改革：王安石及其新政》《欧阳修的治学与从政》《两宋史研究汇编》等。 译者张钰翰，1983年生，上海人民出版社副编审。
